This space will soon be filled up with news and views from the Commission that we hope will be informative and interesting for you. If you have landed on this page and aren’t sure who the Commission are, or what we do, we are an independent body set up by the UK Parliament with the dual aims of ensuring integrity and public confidence in the democratic process. You can always find out more information about us and our various statutory roles on our main website here.
We are now just a few short months away from the next UK Parliamentary General Election on 7 May and as you’d expect, things are getting busy! The deadline for registering to vote at the election is 20 April and the Commission will be launching a national public awareness campaign running up to this deadline to remind people that they need to register, with activity taking place across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, on 16 March.
Our campaign is designed to support the work that local electoral administrators and their teams in local authorities around the UK are already doing to get people registered. If you are planning local activity to help get people registered, which is now even easier to do thanks to the new online registration system at – www.gov.uk/register-to-vote – we would encourage you to get in touch with the electoral services team in your area to let them know what they are doing or to see how you can support their plans. You can find the contact details for your local electoral administrator at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/.
Of course we will be doing a lot of activity before 16 March. We will be doing additional campaigns aimed at overseas voters and service voters to let them know how they can get registered. We are also working with a wide range of partners who are helping us reach out to specific groups of under registered voters, such as young people, BME voters and recent home-movers. You’ll be able to hear about some of the activity our partners will be doing in future blog posts and you can see who we are working with on our main website here, where you can also find a range of template resources we have produced to help get people registered to vote.
We’ll be sharing more details about the campaign, including our new TV advert, on the blog soon. We’ll also be posting other materials across our other social media channels that we hope you will be able to share yourselves before our main campaign kicks off. So as well as coming back to the blog, follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with the latest information.
Of course we won’t just be using the blog to talk about our campaign. We’ll be posting regularly on all aspects of the Commission’s work and do let us know in the comments if there are any areas you’d like us to cover in particular and we can see what we can do in the future.
So don’t forget to come back and keep letting us know what you think!
